Poison rings and lockets were developed in Europe during the 1700s as a way to either surreptitiously do in your enemy or commit suicide to prevent yourself from falling into the hands of your enemy. Now it has other more innocent uses too – like holding ashes, lockets of hair, herbs, or any other tiny treasure you want to keep with you.
This capsule-shaped locket is handsomely decorated with a crescent moon on one side and a five-pointed star on the other. Each is elaborately embellished with scrolls and silver balls, all done in relief against a recessed background and treated with an antique effect for character.
Both ends are also treated with similar complementary designs, and the bottom in particular holds a rainbow moonstone cabochon.
The inner compartment extends to the bottom of the locket.
**If you look closely at the photos you'll see that the locket is 'keyed': The lid is slotted to fit a small ridge on the body. This keeps the locket securely closed, so that whatever you put inside will be safe. But be careful to always align the slot with the ridge before pulling the lid off to open it; otherwise you'll risk damaging it.
